Lift and celebrate the history, heritage and accomplishments of Blacks

February is the time of year when the history, heritage and accomplishments of Blacks is celebrated, followed by March where we similarly mark the worldwide importance of Women’s achievements.

And this is the best time of year to consider the proud place that the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company holds in the region’s cultural and artistic communities, and its status as a world-class dance company.

Since its founding in 1968 by Jeraldyne Blunden, DCDC has given dancers and artists of color a place to perfect and showcase their art. It has provided audiences in Dayton and around the world with enjoyment and insight into the magic and wonder of African-American dance, music and culture.

A word from Chief Executive & Artistic Director of DCDC

I am honored to lead DCDC into its 57th season as one of Ohio’s most important African-American arts organizations and as Dayton’s sole performing-arts touring company. As recently as last fall, we again showed New York audiences the best of Dayton during a thrilling run at the famed Joyce Theater in Manhattan, our fourth New York season.

In these times, our company uses the power of dance to bring light where there is darkness, healing where there is struggle and joy where there is sadness.

And yet, appearances can be deceiving; what you see on stage is the carefully crafted magic and light, skill and passion. Behind the curtain, there is a business to run — one which, just as with your business, is challenging and increasingly expensive. The production of just one evening in the theatre means a significant outlay of thousands of dollars, which can never be recouped by ticket sales alone.

That is why I am reaching out to you now, as fans and followers of DCDC and its story. Raising funds for the arts is as challenging as ever. DCDC is solidifying and stabilizing itself to look long into a bright future.
I—we—very much need, and would appreciate, your help in this.

Your financial contribution made to DCDC during Black History and Women’s History months will be a wonderful gift to the company and provide for present stabilization and future solidification. Your donation will honor our founder, support our artists and staff, and would assure that Dayton’s arts, and education communities continue to benefit from our presence in theatres, schools and universities. And you in turn become a part of the stories we represent.
